The Knowledge is Wealth Learning Center (Kwealth), of Boynton Beach, FL, was established in 2011 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization to provide alternative education in the Palm Beach County.  It is designed to aid low-income residents from pre-kindergarten-on-up, who are at the greatest risk of academic failure.

The Kwealth program uses innovative “whiteboard” computer technology to deliver high-impact interactive learning through touch-sensitive computer screens, linked to desktop computers and large projector screens. Participants work in teams, overseen by a combination of state-certified teachers and volunteer tutors. Its goal is to change the negative perception students have about math and other tough subjects by getting them directly involved with their own learning.

There is a strong need for this type of program. With the last 2009 report of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), the largest international assessment of student achievement, the United States ranked 25th in math and 17th in science internationally behind South Korea, Canada and China. This disappointing ranking has prompted many to argue that the U.S. educational system is weak, and must be changed.

Kwealth seeks to help students improve their scholastic performance and successfully graduate from high school. The interactive nature of the learning technology lets students get instantaneous feedback to math and science questions. That, coupled with positive reinforcement from teachers and tutors, fosters successful learning.

Research conducted in England indicates that “whiteboard” computer technology helps improve math performance, when supervised by teachers.

Kwealth has been operating as a division of the Church Assembly Evangelical of Christ since 2005, offering tutoring and homework assistance.  Now it is expanding to low-income families of all ethnic groups and religious faiths to promote self-responsibility and academic success. Its expansion is in conjunction with President Barack Obama’s “Race to the Top” initiative. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, that initiative supports investments in innovative strategies most likely to make U.S. education more competitive internationally. Kwealth aims to spearhead a new and different computer-based approach to help make this happen.
